Health Nurses are assigned to each school in
Chatham-Kent? Do you know what your Public Health
Nurses can do for you? Read on to find out.
Your Public Health Nurses act as a link to all
Public Health Unit programs and resources. Public Health
services aim to promote Healthy Living amongst the student
population. The role of the Public Health Nurses at CKSS is
to provide counselling, resources, consultation and
referrals in regards to the following health topics:

Sexual health information and counselling

Quit smoking programs

Immunizations
-
Substance abuse prevention
-
Birth control and pregnancy testing
-
Healthy eating and physical activity promotion
-
Eating disorders / anorexia / bulimia
-
Mental health
-
Healthy relationships/self esteem
These services are available to students and staff
at CKSS once a week throughout the school year. Students are
welcome to arrange confidential and private appointments
with the Public Health Nurse at school as needed.
The Public Health Nurses are also responsible for
ensuring that all students are up to date with their
vaccinations. Yearly immunization clinics are held at the
school. Students not returning requested immunization
information to the nurse or not updating their vaccinations
as required will be suspended from school under the
Immunization of School Pupils Act, 1990.
The nurses also offer presentations to all Grade 9
Phys Ed classes as part of their mandatory education in the
area of sexual health.
